Click here if you want to discover where I found the secret to growing amazing roses!

The fragrant scent of spring roses is a pleasant reward for any gardener. A symbol of love and friendship, the rose is by far a favorite flower. Rose bushes add beauty to any landscape, and if taken proper care of, will produce several blooms between June and winter. Taking proper care of the rose bush is a key to success. Rose bush care maintenance is easier if you have the proper knowledge on the basic gardening of the rose plants.

Here are some steps you can follow towards the attainment of having the most beautiful rose plants in your garden. First, choose a sunny location to plant your rose bush. At least 6 hours of direct sunlight is recommended each day in order for your rose bush to thrive. Second, assess the area for planting. Rose bushes need to be planted in well-drained soil, and watered regularly. Never let the soil around your roses dry out, and be sure that while watering, you saturate the root area of the plant, and not the leaves.

Excessively wet leaves encourage fungal diseases. Third, spray for your roses even before they are planted. Among the diseases that rose bushes can acquire is powdery mildew, and downy mildew. Another causes black spots on leaves and stems. A wide variety of sprays are available to remedy the disease types. Fourth, prune your rose bush regularly. Rose bushes require attentive pruning. This process helps the plant maintain better circulation, and rids it of dead or useless branches and twigs. An overgrown rose bush, will not offer the same esthetic benefit as a well groomed one. Fifth, put an insect control plan into effect. Aphids and beetles will destroy a healthy rose bush. Quick action at the first sighting of these pests is recommended. Even more ideally, is treating the rose plant before any insects take up residence.

Click here if you want to read more practical tips on rose bush care.

This can be done with store bought insecticides, or homemade remedies like garlic spray. Sixth, protect your rose bushes from the impending winter months.

Adding extra dirt around the bushes to form a mound can be quite helpful. You may also want to wrap your rose plants with burlap, tied with string. This can create and added protection.

Lastly don’t forget to make out time in your schedule each day to do a bit of caring for your rose bush. This way, it doesn’t all pile up and become overwhelming and never leave your roses without tending for an extended period of time. If you go out of town, enlist the help of a friend or neighbor in the same way you would for a pet. Remember growing wonderful and high end roses comes with tender loving care.

Learn why rose pruning is an essential task for every gardener and how you can enhance and revitalize your plants by doing it correctly.

Rose pruning is intimidating to many gardeners, but actually very good for the plants. Becoming an accomplished rose pruner takes time and practice, but keep in mind that it is very hard to kill a rose with bad pruning.

While there is a great deal of disagreement among rose experts regarding how and when to prune roses, it is generally agreed that most mistakes will grow out very quickly and it is better to make a good effort at pruning roses than to let them grow rampant.

For beginners there are four things you need to remember, first encourage new growth and bloom, second remove dead wood, third improve air circulation and fourth shape the rose shrub. The tools you’ll need would be by- pass pruners, long handled loppers and thick long gloves for your hand’s protection. Use tools that are clean and sharp.

Begin pruning from the base of the rose bush and prune to open the center of the plant to light and air circulation. Make your cuts at a 45-degree angle, about 1/4 inches above a bud that is facing toward the outside of the plant. Do not make ragged pruning and remove all broken, dead, dying or diseased wood (Any branches that look dry, shriveled or black. Cut until the inside of the cane is white.)

You also need to remove any weak or twiggy branches thinner than a pencil. If cane borers are a problem in your area, seal the cut with white glue, such as Elmer’s, remove sucker growth below the graft and don’t forget to remove any remaining foliage.

For the perfect time to prune roses, one must determine the class of the rose plant and the zone in which it is growing. Most rose pruning is done in the spring, with the blooming of the forsythia as a signal to get moving. If you don’t have forsythia, watch for when the leaf buds begin to swell on your rose plants, meaning the bumps on the canes get larger and reddish in color.

Hybrid tea roses are the most particular about pruning. If you don’t know what type of rose you have, watch the plant for a season. If it blooms on the new growth it sends out that growing season, prune while dormant or just about to break dormancy, as stated above. If it blooms early, on last year’s canes, don’t prune until after flowering.

My first attempt at a Youtube video is below;

Learn how to care for a rose bush just like the professionals.

Care of rose bush has a formula for success namely sun + water + drainage + rich soil = rose success. Once you’re committed to following the formula for growing rose bushes, for maximum success you’ll simply have to tweak the formula a bit and add some extras.

There are many factors that affect rose plants, one is sunshine and you need to allow the roses to have sunshine for 6 hours a day preferably in the morning but roses may also profit from some afternoon shade. You also need to keep insect pests off your rose bushes.

One may try companion planting with garlic and once per week, while watering your rose bushes, mix some dishwashing soap into the water and apply this ‘insecticidal soap’ to your rose bushes. As always, soil pH is a consideration. Roses prefer a pH ranging from 6.5 to 6.8. For fertilizing roses, a monthly feeding of rose food is recommended.

For rose bush winter care or in cold climates, roses can be mulched, but if you really want to make sure your bushes are protected, practice a winterizing method called the “Minnesota Tip.” Roses need a lot of water. As in the case of sunlight hours, not all rose-watering methods are created equal. On the average, it is best to water rose bushes twice a week — and to water them thoroughly. It would be better to water twice per week deeply than to apply four shallower, less thorough watering over the same time period.

For rose pruning, the proper tool is a set of bypass pruners, not anvil pruners for the latter can crush the rose bush’s stem. Since rose bushes like to send out a strong lateral cane at the node just below a pruning cut, try to make pruning cuts about 1/4 inch above an “outward” facing leaf bud. By doing this and removing plant material from the center of the bush you will create a more open vase-shaped plant less susceptible to disease. The principle behind deadheading roses is the same as it is for any other plant. Removing spent blooms from rose bushes is a way of channeling plant energy into areas where it is needed more.

These are some of the basics of rose bush care. Not too difficult, right? In fact, since there’s a logical reason behind all these tips, they’re probably easier to remember.
